TESTS USED TO
DIAGNOSE BPH

When you first seek medical attention for your BPH symptoms, your healthcare provider will likely perform a simple digital rectal examination, or DRE. This involves gently inserting a lubricated, gloved finger into the rectum to feel the size and condition of the prostate. After the DRE, your healthcare provider may choose to order additional tests to help confirm the diagnosis, including:

Urine Sample
This helps rule out other causes of lower urinary tract symptoms, such as urinary tract infection, or UTI.
PSA Blood Test
This test measures the blood level of prostate specific antigen (PSA). An elevated number may indicate BPH or other more serious conditions, such as prostate cancer.
Urine Flow Study
During this test, patients are asked to urinate into a special device to measure the speed, or rate, of their urine flow.

TALK WITH YOUR
HEALTHCARE PROVIDER

Although BPH is a common condition, men with BPH can get treatment for its obstructive or irritative symptoms. If you think you have BPH symptoms, speaking with your healthcare provider is the best way to get information on what those symptoms mean and how to manage them.
